Upon walking into Gallery 250 of Bostons Museum of Fine Arts, one will find on the wall a particularly eye-catching piece of art. The piece, set high on the corner of the wall encompassed by pictures depicting scenes from the life of Jesus Christ, is Giulio Cesare Procaccinis The Scourging of Christ. In this piece, Procaccinis masterful use of light and shadows in a technique called chiaroscuro dramatically portray the torturing of Christ, and it is this very application of chiaroscuro that immediately caught my eye. With the graph you can see the weapons used in mass shootings in the United States and its relationship to the number of incidents for each weapon. It highlights the fact that handguns are being used in crimes much more often than rifles and also shotguns by a significant margin. With this its hard to say for sure that rifles are the problem in America, because the amount of handgun incidences drastically out way the number if incidences associated with rifles. So much of my life is built around distracting from my endometriosis pain. I watch TV or listen to music while reading. If I engage my mind enough then I can ignore the pain. It is only partially successful. I realized, as I walked to the library, that distraction is how I’ve always gotten through exercise. I don’t like to sweat. It is uncomfortable, although I am working on that distaste. Exercise has always caused pain in my ankles and I’ve never been good at it. Today, I walked in the heat as fast as I could manage to the beat of my Lady Gaga Pandora channel. I used the beat of Pitbull’s Shake Senora to move faster and faster. By the time I made it to the library I was dripping with sweat and my pants were sticking to me. If there were such a thing as tiny men, they could have slid down my cleavage like a slip and slide.
